Katy Ames has spent most of her life on the East Coast and hopes to spend more of it in the UK. In part, so she can indulge in her serious plaid obsession. There isn’t a teenage drama on the CW or a period British TV show she hasn’t binge-watched at least twice. And she can be persuaded to do most things with the promise of bourbon, coffee, chocolate, or a nap, not necessarily in that order. Katy is mom to a small human who has an obscene amount of energy and a blissful ability to ignore swear words, and wife to a man whose reading habits are far too serious. Katy and her family reside in Washington, D.C., a city she where never planned to live and loves so much she’d be happy to talk about for hours. Just ask.
Katy writes contemporary romances that feature heroes who are strong but not so silent, heroines who aren’t afraid to kick ass, and stories that get a little messy before they end happily ever after.
Q & A
I love the HEA, and the escape from the stress of our current world. But the reason I come back to the genre time and time again is because it’s empowering. Because in a world in which women’s sexuality is almost exclusively portrayed through the eyes of men, the majority of romance is written for women by women about women. Young women, older women, single, married, divorced, widowed, college-educated, high-school drop-outs, women who have kids, women who don’t want kids, women who have loved, women who have never been loved in return but are about to be. And women who love having sex. Maybe they don’t know they love sex, maybe at the start of the story they’ve never had sex, or never had an orgasm, or don’t even know what one is. But by the end of the books, goddamn, the ladies are having a f*cking blast. Literally. And I love creating a world where the heroine is strong, smart, and kick-ass, sometimes even a little more than the hero. A world where the ability to love and be loved and enjoy sex are not mutually exclusive. A world in which we can learn a little bit about how the reality of women’s sexuality should be while taking a break from the reality we call life.
Not So Silent Night When Jack insists he and Sadie spend a quiet Christmas night at home, just the two of them, it’s because he has a plan. A surprise. Maybe even more than one. And he’s so excited to make his wife’s biggest holiday wish come true. But you know what they say about best laid plans… From the moment the couple gets home, nothing goes the way Jack expects. Because, little does he know, his event planner wife has cooked up a surprise of her own. But that’s the magic of the holidays. Sometimes the best gifts are the ones we never see coming.
I’m inspired every day by the other authors and readers I meet in the romance community. I don’t think I’ve ever come across such a diverse, dynamic, supportive, and passionate group of people in any other avenue of my life. And it’s inspiring to be surrounding by people who are always dreaming, always striving, and are often so willing to take a break from what their doing to help another member of the community.
My current “masterpiece” (putting it very loosely) is the book I’m releasing in January, “After the Storm.” It’s a bit darker than my previous books, but the emotion is high and the hero and heroine break and remake my heart every time I dive into the story. At the moment, they are definitely the couple closest to my heart and the book that gives the most “feels,” as we say.
Work hard and be nice to people.
It’s actually fairly simple. I’d love to move back to London with my family. I lived there once, years and years ago, and I feel more at home there than most places on earth. But with family and job obligations in the U.S., it seems incredibly unlikely that I’ll ever live there again. Will have to settle for visits in the future! Oh, and being fluent in Spanish, French and Italian. Which will definitely never happen!
Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood. Daniel Burnham.
For being a source of comfort and happiness, particularly to my family and friends. And for knowing how to throw a good party 🙂
“After the Storm,” the third standalone in my Seven Winds Series releases January 18, 2018. Tristan Hurst is tired of running. He’s spent every day since he was 16 trying to escape the consequences of one inexplicable, horrible night. So when his cousin buys a Caribbean resort and offers him a job away from the family firm, Tristan jumps at the chance to leave behind his intolerable father and the life he barely lives.
Tessa Armstrong has a plan and moving to a tropical island isn’t part of it. But when she lands the position of head pastry chef at a luxury hotel, she can’t pass it up. A new country, a new kitchen. And a fresh start far away from the secrets that are becoming harder to ignore. On an island where neither expected to end up, Tessa and Tristan discover something they’ve always wanted: a safe haven. And when friendship becomes something more, they think they’ve landed in paradise. But there’s a storm coming, and the secrets they’ve worked so hard to escape aren’t far behind. And with them, a truth that has the power to wash away a love they never dreamed to find.
After the Island and After the Fall are both for sale on Amazon (and free on KU). After the Storm will available on Amazon & KU starting January 18, 2018. I also write #ChooseYourOwnRomance, a weekly serial I publish on Instagram in which readers get to vote on how Eden and Jude’s romance continues (or does’t!) chapter to chapter. Join in the fun every Thursday on Instagram @katyamesbooks.
