What do you do and Why do you do it?

When I’m not working my day job or freelancing on lifestyle blogs like ‘Thirty On Tap’, I write modern romance novels about not-so-modern women. My characters are what I like to call ‘flawed but fabulous’. They are mothers, daughters, and sisters. They work hard at their careers and at love. And yes, they like to have sex quite a bit! I write because my hope is to broaden the spectrum of women characters in fiction. Women aren’t binary and there are levels to us that aren’t explored. I hope to unlock some of those traits.

Tell us about your most recent work.

 

Still Savage is a sequel to my last novel, Savage. Savage tells the story of fundraising guru Laney Townes, a divorced lesbian whose personal and professional lives intersect into sexy circumstances. In the sequel, Laney reunites with her ex, A-list R&B pop singer Eva Reynolds, for business. Of course, things happen that find them entangled with each other…which is awkward for Eva, who is still dating her male songwriting partner. Yes honey – drama!

Who inspires you? 

First and foremost, my mother – who always wanted me to be a writer but I just had to find my lane (and I have!). My writing heroes include Erica Jong, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Jennifer Weiner.

What do you consider your “Masterpiece” at this time?

The Cougarette series, hands down. It’s based on Laney’s BFF, CeeCee Banks. Forty-something CeeCee is only divorced for hours when she meets Jay – a man a little over half her age. The series is a collection of six books (first one’s free on Amazon!) and takes you on a sexy ride with CeeCee.

What is your motto in life? 

I remind myself often that tomorrow is another day. I tend to hold on to memories of human error way longer than I should and it never does me any favors.

Name your wildest dream. The one you can not imagine achieving, but would love for it to come true. 

I would love to see The Cougarette become a TV dramedy and (bonus!) I’d want a hand in creating the series – not just selling the rights off. That would make my life.

What is your favorite quote?

I am drawn to Alice Walker quotes and, if I had to select one as a motto for life, it would be…‘I have fallen in love with the imagination. And if you fall in love with the imagination, you understand that it is a free spirit. It will go anywhere, and it can do anything.’

 

I keep this ideal of the imagination being a free spirit when I write. I’m still a planner, but I use my plot outline as a road map. There are many ways to get to a destination – on the page and in real life!

When it is all said and done, what would you like to be remembered for?

Life is so hectic so if I’m remembered for anything, I’d want it to be giving my readers a sexy escape.

Tell us about your next project and when will it be available to the public?

I have three projects planned for 2017. In addition to ‘Still Savage’ hitting Amazon in the spring, I have two more novels I’d like to drop. First up is another Cougarette novel, tentatively titled ‘The Westons’. It will kick off a fresh book series, so I’m excited to step back into my fave character’s black stilettos. My third novel is a standalone tentatively titled ‘For The Fandom’, which I hope to drop around the holidays.

Book Review – Wild Aces

Wild Aces by author Marni Mann is an erotic tale of secrets, lies and abuse. I was thrilled to see Brea as the female protagonist in this story. Fans of Marni Mann should remember her from the amazing five part series Unblocked. I loved her spunky, sassy personality in the first book so I was happy that she finally found happiness and love with Trapper in this novel. We also see a little of Frankie and Derek from the first book, but make no mistake this is a standalone novel. You can certainly love this story without reading the first collection, but why would you want to? I highly recommend you get your life by reading both.

The male protagonist Trapper stole my heart from page one before I even knew his name and kept it throughout the entire story, even more so after I learned all of his secrets. The horrific abuse he suffered as a child shaped his future for better and worse, but the man he grew up to be was nothing short of heroic. This story reminds us that no matter where our lives begin, the choices we make and the paths we choose are totally up to us. We can either fall into despair like Trapper’s mom or rise above our circumstances like Trapper. It also reminds us that there are still good people in the world out there fighting for those who can’t fight for themselves.

The story is sexy and provocative with a few twists and turns to keep the reader engaged.  At the beginning of the story Brea confides in her best friend Frankie that she wants “A perfect cock with a good man attached to it” and she definitely gets that in Trapper. He is tall, mysterious and dark, not to mention passionate and loyal. Brea is dealing with the death of her boyfriend and after two years of mourning she is ready to try love again. Frankie and her husband host a masquerade party and Brea is taken with a sexy stranger in a Batman mask. They immediately fall for each other without seeing each other’s faces; just their mouths. And his mouth is perfect. He shows Brea how much potential he has and after setting her body aflame with just a kiss, Trapper takes his leave. Before leaving he enters his number in Brea’s phone, putting the ball in her court.

I love the way the relationship between Trapper and Brea develops from heat and passion to one of love and understanding with only a couple of hiccups along the way. The universe has placed them at the right place and the right time and their connection cannot be denied. Even after she sees his face, Brea feels an indescribable pull to him. The unusual and very awkward situation his face puts them in ends up bringing them closer.  I definitely didn’t see this coming and the way the story developed after the removal of the “mask” was spot on. I was happy that I was correct in guessing what the “Compound” was all about, but I had no idea about Roman and his hidden secret.

Overall I would give this story a 5 of 5 stars for being able to not only transport me to another world, which is the goal of a great book, but making me fall for a guy I would never think about in the real world. There is absolutely no way I would ever date a professional poker player if I were single, but I fell for Trapper in his fictional world. There’s just something about a good man who has beaten the odds in life and has a perfect cock.

Chasing Day – A New Series by Author Twyla Turner

This past week I received an email from one of my favorite romance authors as a part of her mailing list. It contained an offer to receive an Advanced Reader’s Copy of her upcoming series “Chasing Day” in exchange for an honest review. Needless to say I jumped at the chance to get my hands on the latest Twyla Turner creation! Being a self published author I know how important it is to have readers write reviews of your work and I was happy to be able to assist Twyla. Being able to read the series before the general public was the icing on the cake.

After I got over my excitement, I settled down in my favorite chair with my Kindle App and dug in. I read with vigor, curious to find out what was going to happen next with the main characters, Chase McCoy and Daylen Daniels. The story takes place over a 30 year period as the readers watch the best friends, who meet on the school bus when they are in the fifth and fourth grades respectively. That’s where Chase learns a valuable lesson that “external beauty didn’t always match what was on the inside.”  The story is captivating as the two young people who are total opposites bond for a lifetime of love, heart aches, triumphs and downfalls, finally to find their happily ever afters.

Twyla has once again written characters that make the readers fall in love with them. I was taken in by the story and refused to relinquish it until I had milked every drop. I felt like I knew Chase and Day personally and wanted nothing more than to see them beat the odds. Who knew the story of a football jock and a band geek could garner such emotions? A myriad of emotions coursed through my veins as I read about these two wonderfully flawed people.  I was angry at the mean girls, I laughed at the class clown, I cried during the heartbreaks and smiled wide during the triumphs. The story ended just as it should have, but not before taking my feelings on a roller coaster ride.  Thank you Twyla for making my blood pressure go up! Lol

Now let’s get down to brass tax. This is an erotic romance series and there were several steamy scenes to warm your, well you know what it warms… The author shows us a caring and loving scene where Chase and Day lose their virginity to each other. It was done in a very tasteful manner and I was amazed at how attentive Chase was instinctively, especially for a teenage boy full of hormones. I must admit I was not enthused when the main characters were with other people. That had nothing to do with the writing; it was the romantic in me who was rooting for the BFFs to get back together.   I loved how Day transpired from a shy, timid girl into a confident, sexual woman.  I also like the fact that Chase did not enjoy sex with the so called “Pretty Girl” who was frigid and unresponsive, the total opposite of Day. I understand they had to experience someone other than each other to know what they lost, but I don’t have to like it.
